Intel® Skylake – CPU (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) Scalable-Platform

In an ever-evolving digital world, technology trends such as the new Intel Skylake CPUs of the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform (Intel Purley CPU) are impacting datacenters, servers, and the entire IT infrastructure. Over the next three years, the success of more than half of all Global 2000 companies (across commerce, industry, science, and entertainment) will depend on their ability to create digitally enabled services, experiences, and products. Global players expect digital revenue growth of up to 80%, driven by technological advancements and the resulting new usage models.

The resulting global transformation is creating a strong convergence of scalable computing, networking, and storage systems. Emerging workloads require innovative infrastructures that scale seamlessly to support immediate responsiveness and virtually any performance requirement. Data generation and usage continue to grow constantly, while the spread of computing, the expansion of High-Performance Computing (HPC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are creating entirely new application areas to which modern datacenters and networks must adapt. These developments are driving the evolution of more advanced and future-oriented datacenter architectures and network infrastructures.

The New CPU Segmentation of the Intel® Xeon® Skylake (Purley) Scalable Platform

The Intel Xeon Scalable Processor forms the foundation for high-performance datacenter platforms, delivering a major leap forward in agility and scalability. This processor family redefines platform convergence and offers maximum responsiveness across compute, storage, memory, networking, and security. Cloud and communication service providers, as well as enterprises, can now accelerate their most ambitious digital initiatives using a highly dynamic and responsive platform.

Internally referred to as Skylake, the CPUs were renamed from Xeon® E5/E7 to Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Intel® Xeon® Skylake Scalable CPUs feature integrated technologies such as Fabric and Gigabit Ethernet, as well as the AVX-512 instruction set extension, enabling extremely high scalability.

Dynamic scaling from fewer than 10 up to 28 cores and support for up to 8 sockets position the Intel® Xeon® Skylake Scalable Platform as a highly innovative infrastructure solution.

All processors within the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Platform (Intel Skylake/Purley CPUs) utilize the same LGA3647 socket. Each segment — Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze — offers CPUs with a wide range of features including support for 1, 2, 4, or 8 sockets, core counts ranging from under 10 up to 28 cores, varying cache sizes, clock speeds, memory channels and transfer rates, PCIe lane counts, UPI bandwidth (the successor to QPI), and much more. Additionally, specific segments provide optional features such as Omni-Path or FPGA support.

As the naming already suggests, Bronze CPUs (Purley/Skylake) represent entry-level systems starting at 4 cores, followed by Silver and Gold systems, all the way up to Platinum systems with support for up to 8 sockets and 28 cores for the highest performance demands.

Virtualization provides significant benefits for many businesses, increasing the demand for servers capable of hosting virtual machines. Compared to previous generations, the Intel® Xeon® Skylake Scalable Platform supports up to 4.2 times more virtual machines per server, enabling IT departments to consolidate more services onto fewer hardware systems.

Innovative Integrations

The first platform integrations deliver unprecedented performance and latency improvements throughout the infrastructure:

  • Integrated Intel® Omni-Path Architecture (Intel® OPA) Host Fabric Interface: A high-bandwidth, low-latency fabric that optimizes performance and simplifies HPC cluster deployment by eliminating the need for separate host fabric interface cards. Integrated directly into the CPU package.
  • Integrated Intel® QuickAssist Technology (Intel® QAT): Chipset-based hardware acceleration for growing compression and cryptography workloads, delivering greater efficiency alongside enhanced data transport and protection across servers, storage, and networks.

Integrated Intel® Ethernet with scalable iWARP* RDMA*: Up to four high-speed 10Gbps Ethernet ports for high-throughput and low-latency workloads. Ideal for software-defined storage, NVMe over Fabric solutions, and virtual machine migrations. Integrated into the chipset.

Enterprise and Cloud Minimal complexity with compatible virtualization infrastructure. This ensures strict customer SLA compliance. Rapid deployment of Intel VMs alongside other Intel® technology-based servers. Fast response times.
HPC Maximization of vector floating-point performance and efficiency. Higher performance with fewer servers.
Mass Storage Ensuring deterministic storage response. Deterministic performance across cores, cache, memory, and I/O on a single platform.
Communication Efficient delivery of diverse services. Outstanding efficiency and hardware acceleration through a platform offering features for application, control, packet, and signal processing.

Industry-Leading Enterprise Support
